Dental sealants are one of the most cost-effective preventive treatments available for children — and one of the most underutilized. Studies consistently show that sealants reduce the risk of cavities in permanent molars by up to 80% in the first two years after application. The CDC reports that school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with them (external link).
The back molars are the most cavity-prone teeth in the mouth. Their deep grooves and pits are ideal environments for food and bacteria to accumulate — and they are nearly impossible to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. Dental sealants for children solve this problem: NYC kids’ molars are painted with a thin protective coating that creates a smooth, cleanable surface.
The sealant application process is quick, painless, and non-invasive:
- The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly conditioned
- The liquid sealant material is applied to the grooves of the molar
- A curing light hardens the material in seconds
- The result is checked for proper bite and smoothed if needed
We typically apply sealants to the first permanent molars when they erupt around age 6, and to the second permanent molars when they erupt around age 12. Sealants are also an option for primary molars in children at higher risk of decay.
Sealants last several years and are checked at every cleaning appointment. If a sealant chips or wears, it can be reapplied easily. This is a simple, effective investment in your child’s long-term dental health — and one we recommend for virtually all of our patients.
