Two-Phased Orthodontic Treatment for Children: Early Intervention & Comprehensive Care

For some children, we recommend a two-phased orthodontic approach, as opposed to completing one phase of treatment when all permanent teeth are present. Phase I typically begins around age 7-9 to address specific early issues (such as a constricted upper jaw, an underbite, lack of space for developing adult teeth, and habits such as thumb sucking). Some of these issues can only be treated predictably at a younger age. Phase II, or comprehensive treatment, happens when all their adult teeth have come in. This approach allows us to prevent issues detected early on from becoming more difficult to treat.  It also enables us to guide the development of the teeth and jaws to maximize the benefits of their natural growth, helping to achieve the best long-term results while making the process as comfortable as possible.

Early “Phase I” Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This early visit helps us assess growth and development, ensuring we catch potential issues early on.

Phase I treatment typically occurs between ages 7 and 9, when many children still have baby teeth. Early intervention may be necessary to:

  • Guide the eruption of permanent teeth
  • Guide jaw growth
  • Prevent future dental problems

Phase I treatment may include:

  • Palatal expander
  • Braces
  • Invisalign First
  • Space maintainers
  • Headgear/Facemask
  • Habit breaker appliances
  • Extractions of primary teeth

By addressing orthodontic needs early, we can help streamline treatment once all of your child’s permanent teeth have emerged, setting the stage for a smoother and more effective orthodontic experience.

Comprehensive “Phase II” Treatment

Once your child’s permanent teeth have fully emerged, they’re ready for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Phase II focuses not just on aligning teeth, but also on shaping the development of the jaws and facial structures to ensure a functional and harmonious bite.
