Space Maintainers
In some cases, a young patient may lose a baby tooth prematurely. When this occurs, it’s important to assess whether a space maintainer is necessary, as baby teeth serve as natural placeholders for developing adult teeth. Without a space maintainer, adjacent teeth may shift into the vacant space, preventing the proper eruption of the permanent tooth. This misalignment can lead to more complex orthodontic issues, including blocked or impacted permanent teeth.
Based on the number of teeth lost and which specific teeth are affected, our orthodontist will recommend the most suitable space maintainer for your child.
We offer a variety of space maintainer appliances, including the Nance Appliance, Lower Lingual Holding Arch, Band and Loop, and removable options for children who may struggle with fixed appliances. If your child has lost a baby tooth prematurely, please schedule a consultation with our orthodontist to determine if a space maintainer is necessary.
